What is DIACHRON?
Since DIACHRON project has ended we can now refer to DIACHRON as the solution design and implemented throughout the duration of the project. The DIACHRON solution is complete integrated platform of services that can be used as a whole but also separately to cater you custom needs. You can read more about the implemented functionality here.
Is DIACHRON still developed and supported?
The project has officially ended, but various partners continue to work on their respective domains so the DIACHRON modules might get updated from time to time, but there is no defined road map for the evolution of the platform. Since the platform is open source it might also be updated by interested developers outside the project’s consortium.
What is the technology stack under the hood?
Several technologies have been used for the various modules but the majority of source code is written in Java. DIACHRON is also based on the RDF technology stack for data modeling and representation and uses an RDF store (Openlink Virtuoso) as its underlying storage engine.
Who might need DIACHRON functionality?
DIACHRON’s audience consists of organizations and companies that are involved in dataset management and have a need for tracking the evolution of their dataset. Such domains are open and scientific data publishers and/or aggregators, digital preservation organizations and enterprises. In general, anyone who is interested not only to store their older data for backup purposes but to be able to understand how the data evolves, to query the past data as easy as he does it with the current data, to assess the data quality and to annotate and cite the older versions.
Is DIACHRON yet another digital preservation platform?
Yes and no. The DIACHRON architecture and data flow is similar to the OAIS architecture but it goes beyond as it is a specialized approach for dataset preservation and not digital objects preservation. So if you manage digital objects in general (movies, images, text, sound files, etc.) then DIACHRON might not be the perfect solution for you. But if you deal with structured or semi-structured data like ontologies, annotation databases, relational databases, multidimensional data, html/xml files then DIACHRON can surely help you track their evolution.
How much does it cost?
The short answer is zero! Most of the tools developed are provided as open source software under various licenses. Check our Github repository. If you want additional services (customizations, training, consulting etc.) you can contact us at to get in touch with the corresponding partner to assist you.
Can I use DIACHRON for commercial purposes?
It depends on the set of tools you want to use. Most of the tools are published with open source licenses like the “Apache License, Version 2.0” so in that case yes you can. Check the corresponding tool and its license.
